WEIRD is a game in Which Everyone Inevitably Rolls Dice, WEIRD! On a more serious note, WEIRD is a d10 based roll-over style system designed to be quick to learn, easy to use, and exceptionally modular. Our main focus is to expand WEIRD into a bunch of different genres, allowing players to play out their favorite stories. An old western? A mecha? Gothic horror? Why not! And without having to learn a whole new system’s worth of rules each time.
Our first foray into Genres is a Fantasy Western titled Sagebrush and we’ve included content from it as a freely available introduction to WEIRD.
Learning new systems can be a chore. And while we don’t intend for W.E.I.R.D. to replace every game that you play, we want it to be frictionless to get started and to get new friends playing in your games.
So, what makes W.E.I.R.D. quick to learn? We have two major components.
There’s no arguing with your GM or another player over how an ability works or if it can even be used here. Your local rules lawyer will be out of a job if we have our way.
We regularly seek new players to test how long it takes to make a new character and get playing. From start to finish, explaining the rules on the way, we’re aiming for 30 minutes or less, so just enough time for pizza to get there and then get playing.
When we say that a WEIRD is an easy to use system, we mean it.
WEIRD has one dice rolling mechanic, and that’s it. No wondering if you’re rolling over or under something. No shifting target numbers. A simple roll of the dice plus a short list of modifiers. We keep it simple with a d10 based system so it’s easier to tell how powerful something is at a glance. No more 16.67% increases.
As for Game Masters, WEIRD is designed to be extremely simple to run. A comprehensive list of enemies, guidelines for making your own, and a specific objective given to the players means that you’ve got the tools you need for success. We aren’t going to put you on the spot, either. We prefer rules over rulings.
WEIRD is designed from the ground up to be modular. As we continue to work on the WEIRD system we’ll be producing 3 main types of expansion content:
